Buster Keaton’s Sherlock Jr. with R.E.M. Music

Classic Movies Meet Modern Tunes

Mixing old films with new music is like a fun experiment. Imagine watching a silent movie, like Buster Keaton’s “Sherlock Jr.,” but hearing songs from R.E.M.’s albums “Monster” and “New Adventures in Hi-Fi.” This special combo will show in theaters soon, thanks to Blue Starlite Entertainment’s “Silents Synced” series.

Trailer Sneak Peek

In the trailer for this event, you first hear some classic tunes, then it jumps into R.E.M.’s ā€œStar 69ā€ while Keaton’s character follows a mystery. This re-release is to celebrate the film’s 101st birthday next year.

R.E.M. and Buster Keaton Together?

Peter Buck, who used to play guitar for R.E.M., loves Buster Keaton. He said, ā€œBuster Keaton is one of my favorite actor/director/writers in movie history. I’m honored that in some small way R.E.M. is collaborating with him from beyond the grave!ā€

The Band’s Excitement

The band’s manager, Bertis Downs, said all the guys have liked Buster Keaton for a long time. They enjoy how their music fits with the old film. Chris Bilheimer, who helped design the covers for the R.E.M. albums, also made the new poster for “Sherlock Jr.” Fans can even buy it online.

Fans think this mix of old and new is really cool.

Where to Watch

The first show will happen in Athens, Georgia, where R.E.M. started. It’ll be at the Morton Theatre on February 1st. Then, it will be shown all over the country starting February 7th.

A New Way to Experience Movies

This project is the latest in the Silents Synced series. Before, they paired the spooky film “Nosferatu” with Radiohead’s music. Josh Frank, who runs the Blue Starlite cinema in Austin, came up with this idea during the Covid lockdowns. He believes it’s a great way to bring people together for a unique music experience. He’s already planning more pairings with bands like They Might Be Giants and Pearl Jam.
