Soundgarden’s Unique Tune

Soundgarden’s “Head Down” from their 1994 album Superunknown stands out as a peculiar song with its gradual build-up and intense harmonies. Chris Cornell pushed his voice to the limit to convey Ben Shepherd’s lyrics about hiding sadness behind smiles.

Lizzie Weber, a singer-songwriter from St. Louis, has created a strikingly different version of this track. Instead of heavy guitars, she uses soft strings and piano, singing in a much gentler tone compared to Cornell’s powerful vocals.

Back in her school days, Weber was a big fan of Soundgarden. When a friend nudged her to revisit “Head Down,” she dived deep into their music and found inspiration for something fresh. “From then on, I was listening to Superunknown almost obsessively,” she shared, admiring their musical genius and feeling motivated.

Shepherd’s words resonated differently with her now. “There is nuance and depth to Ben’s lyrics,” she reflected. The line, “Bow down to live your life,” seemed to carry a special energy that captivated her.

Fans sometimes find that revisiting old songs can feel like discovering new stories.

Weber started by translating the guitar notes to piano keys, creating an eerie vibe by slowing it down and experimenting with chord changes. This led to the formation of rich harmonies supported by an orchestral backdrop.

Creating the New Version

In March, she traveled to Seattle to collaborate with producer Nathan Yaccino, known for working with Soundgarden. They used various instruments and techniques, including violin, viola, and cello played by Abby Gunderson, to enrich the tune. Phil Schawel and Zach Kranz took care of mixing and mastering.

Rolling Stone’s review once likened “Head Down” to a blend of different classic bands. In this new form, it evokes sounds reminiscent of artists from the late Sixties.

Once finished, she nervously sent it to Shepherd, who responded positively. “I was nervous about how this re-imagined version might be received,” Weber admitted, relieved when Shepherd appreciated her take on it.

Weber has also previously put her own spin on Nirvana and Leonard Cohen tracks. Now, she’s releasing this cover as a single, perfect for Halloween playlists, while preparing for a bold album set for summer. “Like ‘Head Down,’ it’s a departure from anything I’ve done before,” she says.
