Michael Stipe took to the stage at a rally in Atlanta, Georgia, where he played R.E.M.’s “Driver 8” while Democratic figures like Tim Walz and Doug Emhoff were present.
“Thank you for being here, and thank you all for voting or getting ready to vote,” he said, urging everyone in Georgia to encourage friends, family, and even skate clubs to head out and cast their votes. He believed it was crucial for the community.
Before performing, Stipe shared that the song was a favorite of the governor’s, which is why he chose to sing it. Fans felt the energy and importance of the event.
He also poked fun at Trump by suggesting the crowd spell V-O-T-E with their arms to the tune of “Y.M.C.A.” Later, he recounted a story about a lovely moment in New York in 2018. He noticed a couple who seemed deeply in love dining nearby. Turns out, it was Kamala Harris and Doug Emhoff!
Reflecting on them years later, he expressed joy in witnessing such genuine love, both privately and publicly on a grand stage.
Last month, Stipe performed “Driver 8” again, alongside Jason Isbell, at another fundraising event in Pittsburgh.
