Tigers Blood: A Big Moment for Waxahatchee

Waxahatchee’s album Tigers Blood just got her a Grammy nod.

Back on the Tiny Desk stage, Waxahatchee returned after ten years to perform songs from her celebrated sixth album. The first time she played there was when her set was a bit of a mess—her amp gave out and she felt lost. “I rolled out of the tour van … I sort of didn’t really know what I was doing at all. My amp broke in the middle [of the set],” she recalled. “I’m really happy to be back.”

This time, she brought her full band, feeling more prepared and confident. She started with "Much Ado About Nothing," a single she released last October. Then, she played three tunes from Tigers Blood and ended with "Fire" from Saint Cloud.

Crutchfield later shared her thoughts in her newsletter about the first Tiny Desk show, saying it was a sweet memory but needed improvement. “Because I don’t want to fish for compliments I’ll refrain from sounding too self-deprecating here BUT my original Tiny Desk does, in my opinion, leave some room for improvement,” she wrote. It’s a reflection of her younger days with its rushed bangs and all, but she’s glad to have another go as an adult with her band and fresh songs.

Fans might feel proud seeing how far she’s come.

Her album Tigers Blood was nominated for Best Americana Album at the Grammys, marking a milestone for her. Recently, she also released an EP featuring a cover of Lucinda Williams’ song with MJ Lenderman, who appears on her album too.

Next March, Crutchfield will take the stage with Williams at Willie Nelson’s Luck Ranch during SXSW. She’s in charge of putting the show together, promising an exciting event.
